In this article I describe some thirty-five woods which are suitable
for carving. The carver should be ready to try any variety of wood that
comes his way, provided it is seasoned and little expense is involved.
Woods new to this country are continually being imported and exciting
discoveries can be made.
A few minutes’ work will show the carving qualities of a new wood. The
amateur, carving just for his own pleasure, can afford time to
experiment on small pieces while the professional carver tends to use
woods already proved.
When you go to a lumber or timber yard do not be put off by the look of
the outside of a stack of timber. Sometimes it is stacked in the open
under a roof but not closed in, a method also used in air seasoning. At
first glance the wood may look a uniform grey but its true color will
not be revealed until the wood is cut or carved.
Wood as a material is invariably of great interest to those who work
with it and in a timber yard you might possibly find men who have been
in the trade for years. You will find them knowledgeable and very ready
to tell you all they know. Wood that works easily in their machines is
likely to carve well also.

If you prefer to use the double broiler, you should first bring the
water to a boil then add your soap base of choice to the boiling water,
cover the pot and set the fire on low. Keep in mind that this method
will take some time. The soap base may take as long as 10 minutes to
melt. Stirring occasionally will also ensure an even melt.
You can also add some optional ingredients:
* You can add fragrance to your soaps. You can buy your choice of
fragrance oil in your local hobby store. Keep in mind that the
fragrance oil should be completely mixed in so that the soap will not
have a cloudy appearance.
* You can also add your color preference when making soaps. You can use
mica or food coloring for it. When using food coloring, you should
start by adding one drop at a time and mixing it thoroughly until you
reach your color preference.
After the soap base has melted, pour it into individual molds, tray
molds, or blocks, which can then be sliced. You can also be creative
and design your own soap mold to create soaps of various shapes and
sizes.
Creating your own handmade soap by the melt and pour soap making
process can be fun and an inexpensive process. It also makes great
gifts for family and friends.

1. Save - don’t toss
Christmas, birthdays and holidays are a bonanza for the paper crafter.
One of my favorite items to save is cards. I create gift tags and even
small gift boxes from these often-tossed greetings. Next time you’re
gathering a mound of wrapping paper to throw away, take a second look.
Does it have potential? Save yourself a bundle, and store some of it
away.
2. Ebay
What in the world isn’t available on ebay? "Wanna be" crafters are a
dime a dozen, and often their failure to stick it out becomes a boon to
the hard core crafter. When they get tired of storing supplies they
know they’ll never use, you’re in luck. Keep a sharp eye out for these
purging ex-crafters, and be ready to cash in on your good fortune!
3. Spy those deals in disguise
There’s an old saying, "Never judge a book by its cover." Well, if
you’ve priced photo albums, you know that covers can be pretty darned
expensive. The real value of an album is indeed in the cover. A great
way to cut costs is to buy an inexpensive album, throw away the inside
pages, and fill it with your own pages fit into plastic sleeves.
Instead of paying $30.00, you’ll spend maybe $10.00. Watch for ways to
convert less expensive products into the material you need.
4. Bulk up and swap
We all know that buying in larger quantities usually saves us money.
The next time you go to Sam’s Club and spy a product that you only need
one of, go ahead and buy the bulk quantity. Invite your crafty friends
over, and swap these items for things they have an abundance of. Trade
your way to a savings.
5. Get the freebies
One of the greatest expenses for crafters can be patterns. Those who
don’t buy patterns usually purchase crafting magazines for fresh ideas.
Why not get online, and find free patterns? There are a number of sites
that catalogue patterns for your convenience. When you need a fresh
idea, join a forum where others who share your passion are ready and
willing to share their ideas.
Paper crafts are amazing works of art that can bring joy to the creator
and a sentimental tear to the eye of the receiver. Such a beautiful art
doesn’t have to empty your wallet.

The easiest way to get started is to make your own memory wire jewelry.
Memory wire is flexible wire that holds it shape when released. It
comes in bracelet, necklace and ring sizes. It’s quite easy to use and
you don’t have to worry about sizing. You simply cut a length of wire
to suit, close off one end by making a circle with pliers, string the
beads on and then close the other end. Add a little garnish by hanging
a beaded dangle off the end and you are done! The necklaces made with
memory wire are nice because they sit tight against the throat and
bracelets can be made with multiple wraps for a thick chic look.
Another method for making your own jewelry include stringing the beads
on a flexible coated wire (tiger tail or beadalon) and crimping the
ends shut with special beads and a crimp tool This allows for more
flexibility in design than a memory wire piece but is a bit harder to
make and the crimping does take a bit of practice. With this method,
you will most definitely need a beading board to lay out your design on
as you want to be sure it is symmetrical.
If you like the look of cascading necklaces and charm bracelets, you
can make jewelry using lengths of chain. You can buy the chain in
sterling, silver plated or gold filled and cut it to suit. Use headpins
to attach the beads and finish off the piece with a clasp.
If you do decide to start making your own jewelry, you might need to
rein in your impulse to buy every pretty bead and jewelry making
component out there. Make a plan of exactly what you want to make and
purchase only those things necessary for that design. If you don’t you
might end up with a closet overflowing with excess beads like me!

As with most things, an oil painting begins with good planning, and the
art graceful oil painting is the same. Start with plenty of good
brushes, #1 to #10 (round kolinsky brushes are a good choice) together
with one or two #20 brushes to cover larger areas, and not forgetting
turpentine to wash the brushes afterwards.
The palette should be of hard, dark wood, wiped beforehand with linseed oil.
The paint itself should be of good quality and of the basic colour
range, making sure that all paints are compatible. Again, planning is
needed here as you may need to purchase any specific colours according
to the subject of your painting. The paint is a vital ingredient,
obviously, and as with most things, you get what you pay for. Do not
use cheaper paint for things they are not capable of doing; realise
their limitations. If you intend to use thick paint and bold colours,
then cheaper paint can be a practical alternative. However, with
cheaper paint, apart from using cheaper pigments, the pigment is not
ground up so finely. The manufacturer may also use a base filler to
bulk up the volume of the paint. This all means that the colour of the
paint will fade over time, so the brighter colours may well be alright
but the more subtle colours will suffer. Therefore, do not use them to
mix the more subtle colours or for paintings that are intended to last.
The more expensive paints, on the other hand, have much greater tinting
power. Therefore, when mixed with a white paint, which are usually
inexpensive, they will go a lot further and so it is not quite as bad
as it seems!
The canvas should be of a good quality, primed several times beforehand
and ideally it should be rubbed afterwards with fine sandpaper, all for
the purpose of covering and hiding the texture of the canvas.
To create a work of art, the painting itself should be planned out
also. It can be either be drawn on the canvas initially, or drawn on
separate paper and transferred to the canvas by carbon paper. Either
way, it should be sketched very approximately to start with, making
sure that the overall basic dimensions are in proportion, and then the
increasingly finer details can be added.
The subject of the painting should be something close to your heart.
Invariably, the more interest you have in a subject the more success
you will achieve. Large areas of the background should be painted
first, allowing sufficient time for drying in between coats. Some
people tend to wipe the surface after each coat with half an onion in
order for subsequent layers to be absorbed better. Foreground details
and finer details are added last. A final coat of lacquer can also be
added.
These are only some of the basics of creating an oil painting. Much can
be learned by watching an expert at work, regardless of the topic, so
you should make every effort to find a competent artist who can create
a work of art, with flowing, graceful lines in his oil painting. But
the internet is also an ideal place to gather a great deal of
information about different oil painting techniques.
